Abstract
The worldwide air traffic has steadily increased over the last decade at a rate of about 3 % per year. If this rate is sustained in the future, the aircraft emissions will double over the next 25 years. Aviation will then be a significant source of emission of greenhouse gases and will impact on the ozone layer. In this talk a review of recent works on the evaluation of the aviation impact on the atmosphere will be given, with emphasis on the mechanisms involved in the atmospheric physical and chemical processes and their interference with the "global warming potential" of the aircraft emissions. Taking into account the variety of time and space scales involved in the formation and the evolution of the aircraft emissions, a strategy to reduce the uncertainties associated with the current impact studies will be given.
