Abstract :The major opportunities for progress in mesoscale weather prediction will be reviewed. The formulation of mesoscale models is currently experiencing improvements both in the numerical formulation and in the accuracy of parametrizations. These will be reviewed and hierarchized in view of the short time scale of mesoscale processes. The observational basis is rapidly improving, with the advent of international mesoscale experiments such as PYREX, FASTEX or the upcoming MAP (Mesoscale Alpine Program). The weakest aspects of mesoscale weather prediction systems are currently the data assimilation methods, because of insufficient experimentation. On-going research at CNRM and elsewhere will be presented.
