General Rules and Guidelines
version 2.2 (April 2009)
"Charte utilisateur pour l'usage de ressources informatiques et de services internet".
Following paragraphs summarise the main points but for full details see the detailled pages. Notices may also from time to time be issued through Computer Affairs part of weekly news (also available on our internal web) and users are expected to make themselves aware of these notices.
User Identifiers and Accounts
- User identifiers are issued for use by a single named individual. All users of systems attached to the CERFACS network must be registred on Computing Support Group
- User must not log in using another individual's login name, or allow any person to access facilities using his login name.
- User must set a secure login password and keep it secret (see Setting a new logon password). The choice of a secure password is essential both to the security of your own account and potentially to those of others as many means of "hacking" systems require the hacker to have an account on the system to which they can login.
Responsible Use of Computing Facilities
- Accounts on the Systems are use primarily for research work. A small amount of recreationnal use is permitted but this must not be allowed to interfere with the usefulness of the system. For this reasons, and for security reasons, server processes (eg IRC daemons) must not be left running on the systems.
- At all times, long running jobs should be run using the batch system
- Information belonging to other users is confidential. You must not read, access or modify any file not owned by you without the explicit permission of the owner
Responsible Use of the Network
- Users must not misuse networking facilities, eg by attempting to access remote computer systems without proper authorisation
- Systems attached to the network, their users and any external connection (eg modems) must be registred. Proper care must be taken to ensure their security and that of the network as a whole.
- Network traffic is charged and care must be taken to not increase such charges unnecessarily. The network bandwidth is strictly dedicated to CERFACS' research activities.
- Users must not attempt to hide their identity when sending mail, or attempt to impersonate someone else. Email must not be abusive, intimidating, harassing or misleading. The sending of bulk unsolicited email is not permitted and you should not retaliate if you get junk email.
- Web pages must conform to guidelines and must have the approval of the Web Administrator.
Legal and Related Responsibilities
- Recordable CDs, Tapes, Diskettes can be use :
- For software and user's data backup or archive (for internal use).
- As an exchange media for CERFACS' public data or contractual data between autorized persons (for external use).
All other purposes have to be formally agreed by user's team leader.
- System software and proprietary software must be used correctly in accordance with licensing conditions and must not be copied or modified.
- Users must always abide by any legislation that applies to the use of computer systems and laws relating to copyright, pornography and criminal damage.
