Theoretical and numerical combustion

This course focuses on theoretical methods in the field of combustion and numerical methods required to understand and develop numerical codes for combustion problems. It is based on the textbook « Theoretical and numerical combustion » and is given by the authors Dr Thierry POINSOT (IMFT) and Dr Denis VEYNANTE (EM2C, Ecole Centrale Paris). The session takes place on five lessons of 3 hours (two and a half days). Three lessons are used to summarize the elements of combustion theory required to understand CFD, describe the modern methods used in recent CFD solvers for reacting flows and discuss the most advanced applications in the fields of combustion instabilities, flame/wall interaction, ignition, quenching. Two lessons are devoted to turbulent combustion modeling and present all models used today for turbulent flames in all regimes (premixed, diffusion and partially premixed). The incorporation of detailed chemical kinetics in turbulent flame models is discussed. No hands-on are proposed for this course.
