Ocean data Assimilation
A global ocean variational data assimilation system for the OPA general circulation model has been developed at CERFACS for climate research applications including seasonal forecasting and ocean reanalysis. The system, known as OPAVAR, has been applied in several national and European projects. Most recently, the OPAVAR system has been used in the FP6 project ENSEMBLES to produce multiple multi-decadal ocean analyses for initializing probablistic forecasts on seasonal to decadal time scales.
In early 2006 a collaborative project was initiated between CERFACS and ECMWF to develop NEMOVAR, the next generation variational ocean assimilation system for NEMO, the latest version of OPA. The partnership in the NEMOVAR project has now grown to include additional European research laboratories and operational institutions. The aim of the Ocean Data Assimilation project at CERFACS is to continue research and development in variational assimilation for improving the NEMOVAR system.
