Context / Contexte

Up to now, CFD codes were devised in two separeted branches, following the kind of mesh used for the simulations.
On one hand, there were finite volume structured solvers dedicated to structured blocks composed of hexahedral volumes. In this case, the mesh process is very long, especially for complex CAD (man-made process).
On the other hand, unstructured grids composed of tetrahedra, prisms, pyramids and hexahedra are meshed very easily on regular computers, even on very complex CAD (automatic process).
The AAM team is involved in blending both approaches inside a single CFD code named elsA, which is used by CERFACS’ partners such as Airbus, SAFRAN and co-developped with ONERA. We call hybrid version of elsA the CFD version of elsA able to run on structured and unstructured grids separately, or on hybrid grids composed of structured and unstructured grids.

Description / Description

For CERFACS, future industrial applications will focus on turbulent structures computed through a Large Eddy Simulation assumption. With this approach, the largest turbulent scales are computed and the smallest ones are modelled. LES flows are now routinely computed with elsA on structured grids (aerodynamic and turbomachinery flows) at CERFACS. Now, our goal is to analyse the performance of the unstructured / hybrid capabilities of elsA for Large Eddy Simulations. We are interested in academic flows for which the precision of the results will be analysed. If possible, we also propose to analyse the flow over a more complex configuration, which is representative of industrial one.
We are looking for a trainee student with a strong desire in analysing and studying the future trends for industrial CFD. Basic knowledge on CFD (numerical schemes, modelling) is required. LES in elsA being one of the main research themes of the team, the trainee student will have to work in strong collaboration with the team members.
