Coupling numerical models is a central issue in the climate research community and in other research fields such as electromagnetism, computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Ideally, the coupler, i.e. the software interface between the different models, should allow the realization of coupled simulations on different types of platforms at a minimal cost, the testing of different coupling algorithms (e.g. time strategy or interpolation methods), and an objective intercomparison of coupled models by changing some or all component models. One can see right away that these specifications strongly suggest modularity as the key concept in designing the interface software structure.OASIS was written to answer these requirements. OASIS is a software allowing synchronized exchanges of coupling information between numerical models representing different components of the climate system. The last versions, OASIS3 and OASIS4, were developed in the framework of the EU FP5 PRISM project, and are now supported and developed further within the EU FP7 IS-ENES project.
