Internal waves in enclosed geometries.

Abstract

The talk will describe a discretisation and regularisation scheme for the equation describing internal waves in closed geometries. The governing equation is, in terms of the streamfunction, a wave equation in spatial coordinates. The solutions to the equation together with it's boundary conditions are extremely sensitive to the shape of the boundary. For this reason the problem is often termed 'ill-posed'. A further challenge is the fact that solutions may have fractal structure. Numerical solutions will be compared with analytical solutions and laboratory experiments.
