Fields Test

Section Co-ordinator: DERA, Malvern (England)

This Section covers wake vortex measurements on full-scale aircraft, which have so far concentrated on the final approach to landing. The methods used include coherent laser radar (also called lidar or ladar), radar, sodar and anemometer arrays. These topics overlap to some extent with the "Sensors" Section. Field-test measurements fall into two distinct classes. Vortex monitoring and tracking is usually carried out with pulsed lidar allowing long-range (a few km) range-resolved measurements. In contrast, the detailed vortex physics is best studied with CW lidar. This is important for low-vortex wing design, comparison with laboratory measurements and theory, and for future certification measurements.
