*** United developing turbulence sensor ***

CHICAGO (AP) - Passengers had settled in for the night on a long flight from Tokyo to Honolulu when it felt like a giant fist slammed into the United Airlines jumbo jet. A pocket of air turbulence hit with such violence in the late 1997 incident that one woman suffered a broken neck and died while 100 other passengers were injured. Turbulence often strikes without warning, but now United and two technology companies - AlliedSignal Aerospace and Coherent Technologies - hope to develop a system that could give passengers a one-minute warning to fasten their seat belts to avoid being tossed around the cabin.
