Third WakeNet Workshop
on
"Measurement techniques for vortex wakes"
to be held on 22-23 May 2000
at DERA, Malvern, UK
Call for contributions
Call for participation
A workshop will be held on the important topic of "Measurement techniques for vortex wakes" within the framework of the "Thematic Network Wake Vortex". After two successful workshops on "European wake vortex research" and "Prediction of far field vortex location and decay" we felt there was an urgent need to address the field of measurement techniques for vortex wakes. Lack of both adequate techniques and available technologies is seen as a severe impediment to characterise and control wake vortices. On the other hand, intense research is ongoing or envisaged (in EC projects C-Wake, S-Wake and I-Wake, for example) from where significant progress is expected.
Such efforts may not be known everywhere, not even to those who are in urgent need of this information.
Bringing together distinguished experts from industry and research, from airlines and authorities to share their views, expertise and judgement – this will be the aim of the workshop which should aid in stimulating innovative solutions for practical application.
Topics to be addressed
Contributions are solicited in the fields of
Other contributions related to wake vortex research (new results from tests, CFD calculations, operational issues etc.etc.) are also welcomed and can be presented in an open session. Time will be limited to 10 minutes at most, depending on the number of contributions.
About WakeNet
The Thematic Network Wake Vortex (WakeNet) was established within the 4th Framework Programme of the European Commission. Its aim is to provide expert information exchange in the field of Wake Vortex, but covers also wake detecting instrumentation and operational aspects of flight safety. WakeNet is considered a unique information source for all aspects of the wake vortex issue.
About Wakenet Workshops
The first workshop was held at ONERA, Chatillon, on 1-2 December 1998 on "European wake vortex research activities". The second workshop, held at DLR Oberpfaffenhofen on 16-17 November, 1999 focused on means to predict far-field vortex location and decay, in addition to practical consequences for ATC.
An attractive programme will be put together for this forthcoming meeting to be held at DERA Malvern, an organisation with great experience in measuring wakes of full-size aircraft. A preliminary program will be issued in about a month from now.
In addition to the topic of "measurement", an ‘open’ non-tasked session is planned where other items of vortex wakes may be dealt with to emphasise the global character of WakeNet. Short contributions are solicited for this session as well.
The meeting will start around 9.00 hrs on Monday morning, May 22 and will last till early in the afternoon May 23 to give you sufficient time for your return trip.
Participation
The WakeNet workshop will be open to partners from related European programs and to those of the aviation community with an interest in the subject, notably those which we have identified themselves as "Interest Groups". Due to size of the Conference room at DERA, participation is limited to 100 attendees.
Publication
The Workshop aims to stimulate information exchange. Each of the authors is urged to hand-carry a sufficient number of copies for participants and reviewing. The ‘hand-outs’, together with remarks from the evaluator and a summary of the discussions and conclusions will be used as the basis of the yearly Technical Progress Report of WakeNet.
Organising Committee and local arrangements
Mike Harris (DERA), Rob Young (DERA), Eric Coustols (ONERA) and Bram Elsenaar (NLR) will form the Organising Committee, together with Klaus Huenecke (DASA Airbus). Mike Harris will also be responsible for local arrangements.
Abstracts for contributions
You are encouraged to submit a contribution that fits into the list of addressed topics. A one page abstract should be E-mailed before April 15 to
mharris@dera.gov.uk and elsenaar@nlr.nl. The Organising Committee will make the final selection on the basis of your abstract and with the aim to get a well balanced program. You will be notified of the acceptance before April 21.
Application and hotel reservation
Applications should be made by returning the attached ‘Application Form’ to Mike Harris, DERA. Information will also be found on the Internet Site http://aton.cerfacs.fr/~wakenet. Participants must arrange for hotel accommodation themselves, and early booking is strongly advised. Details will soon be available on the web site.
The meeting will take place at DERA, Malvern, UK, situated beneath the Malvern Hills about 50km SW of Birmingham, and ~40km from the border with Wales. The journey takes about one hour by train or car from Birmingham Airport, and two to three hours from London or Manchester. All necessary travel information will be placed on the web site.
To participate in this Workshop please fill in the attached form and return this as soon as possible to Mike Harris (DERA). Applications must be received before 21 April to allow time for clearance procedures.
